The first edition of the national hemp festival in Cherveux

Friends of the 420 club! On Saturday, September 16th, the medieval castle of the village of Cherveux, near Niort in Deux-Sèvres, will be the scene of the first edition of the national hemp festival.
The program for this first national hemp festival includes discussions, festivities, and cultural events featuring presentations by professionals, industry stakeholders, and hemp experts. All these speakers will be on hand to lead the day's activities and share information about the uses of hemp in construction, wellness, textiles, and food.
Cherveux, "capital of hemp"
Hemp is a plant with multiple properties that has accompanied the development of human civilizations since the dawn of time. Before the 20th century and the advent of the cotton monopoly, hemp was an integral part of the lives of many French farmers, serving a variety of industries.
Guillaume Dumoulin, co-organizer of the event, explains that the town of Cherveux takes its name from this plant, the cultivation of which was once flourishing in the area. In the past, many farmers in the Deux-Sèvres region worked growing hemp to supply the Royal Rope Factory in Rochefort. It is in honor of this history and these now-vanished traditions that the organizers decided to create this event.
A day to discover…
The hemp festival will be an opportunity for visitors to discover producers from all over France who will be showcasing their hemp-based products and creations.
Norwegian hemp cocottes, hat making, a mobile bookstore, a jeans tailor, biodynamic farming, producers of oil, mustard, paste, cosmetics or CBD, but also a zinc roofer or a Tiny House builder, in total about thirty exhibitors will come to share their trades, their innovations and their uses of hemp in food and many other fields!
You will discover all the applications and benefits it can bring in many areas.
A day for exchanging ideas…
This day will primarily be an opportunity to learn more and discuss hemp and its benefits in the fields of construction, well-being, food, and textiles. Speakers from very different backgrounds , working in agriculture, technology, medical research, and construction, will take turns speaking throughout the day.
The interventions and discussions will focus in particular on the development, structuring and prospects of hemp in terms of concrete application and regulation in each area and in general.
You will have the opportunity to meet Senator Thomas Dossus from the Rhône region, who will be participating in this event. A specialist in circular economy and land-use planning, he notably worked on drafting a resolution passed by the Senate in 2022 on the development of hemp-related economic sectors.
A day to celebrate…
This will be the perfect opportunity to get together and celebrate this beautiful plant, its benefits and the many possibilities it offers, perhaps over a good craft hemp beer, or even CBD cocktails.
The first Hemp Festival marks the beginning of a new tradition that is intended to be repeated every year.
A veritable little hemp village will be set up in the idyllic setting of the medieval Château de Cherveux. On site, you'll find food and drinks showcasing the famous serrated leaf and its seeds, which can be seasoned to satisfy the appetites of young and old alike.

The first Cherveux Hemp Festival, taking place during Heritage Days, offers a unique opportunity for those curious about and interested in medieval history to visit the Château de Cherveux. The castle's mythical and ancient foundations are said to have been laid by the mysterious fairy Melusine. During your visit, the castle will reveal its history, allowing you to journey through the pivotal moments and wars that have shaped French history.
