THCV: the cannabinoid as fast as it is powerful
Are you one of those CBD adventurers looking for new effects? Do you want to experience all the cannabinoids that hemp has to offer?
You've come to the right place, here is a cannabinoid, semi-synthetic, but naturally present in hemp: THCV .
This new gem has barely entered the green gold rush, and already it's flying off the shelves. Are you one of them? This is where it's happening!
What is THCV
Like its twin, THCP , tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is one of the cannabinoids naturally present in hemp and cannabis plants. However, its concentration is typically around 1 or 2%. To produce our Elevator, which reaches 20%, we use chemical processes. It is synthetically produced from the parent cannabinoid: CBG.
The entourage effect of THCV
Like CBD derivatives such as HHCPO or THCPO, the action of THCV is still relatively unknown, but what is known is that THCV plays a major role in what is called the entourage effect.
This term refers to the interactions that cannabinoids have with each other, either enhancing or weakening one another. THCV is relatively weakly psychoactive, especially in small quantities, but it can facilitate the effects of THC.
The entourage effect brought about by THCV has helped to explain why cannabis in the 1970s, with less THC, was just as potent and psychotropic as that of today.
In fact, THCV was more concentrated in the cultivated flowers at that time. Its concentration was around 4 or 5%. These plants were "natural" in the sense that they had not been modified or crossbred. It was only later, when efforts were made to increase the THC concentration, that the THCV concentration decreased to around the average level found today.
THCV vs THC
THCV therefore facilitates the action of THC, making it stronger and faster, but as you know our flowers and resins contain less than 0.3%. In that case, you may be wondering what the effect of THCV is. Well, as you'd expect, THCV is chemically very close to THC. In fact, the only difference is THCV's shorter side chain. This difference is slight, but it makes quite a difference, as researchers have noted:
- THCV has a faster and shorter psychoactive action: it produces a milder high and less lucidity.
- It reduces hunger, while THC increases it
- Like CBD, it has a soothing, anti-stress effect
Among its properties, its appetite-suppressant effect has particularly excited the scientific community, which has seen great potential in the fight against obesity. Recreational users are generally more interested in its mild and short-lived high, which allows for a brief respite during a long day.
History and discovery of THCV
The discovery of THCV was relatively late. It was discovered in the 1970s, when the hippie movement was pushing the field of research to pay greater attention to cannabis, if only to control its consumption. This is exactly what happened with THCV.
Upon its discovery, researchers found that African varieties had a higher concentration, so this was used to determine the origin of cannabis seized by law enforcement and customs.
THCV is legal and could be for a long time to come
You probably learned this with HHC: new compounds can remain legal for a while before authorities decide to ban them. Often, the potential health effects, and especially the risk of addiction, are cited as reasons for the ban.
Initial studies on THCV appear very promising in this regard. A preliminary study on smoking¹ observed that this molecule behaved as a CB1 receptor antagonist, which means it could offer anti-addiction properties.
Other studies have also observed potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in it, such as CBD 2 .
They also noted a possible regulatory effect on blood sugar and a neuroprotective action.
Research on THCV is still in its early stages, but if these initial observations are confirmed, this cannabinoid could have a very bright future. Nevertheless, and once again, research on this cannabinoid remains very limited, so we urge you to exercise caution and avoid excessive consumption.
