Ice o Lator hash : a revolutionary extraction method
The name Ice-o-Lator originally referred to the brand name of the equipment used to make a type of hash. This equipment uses water and ice to separate the cannabinoid- and aroma-rich components (primarily trichomes, terpenes, and flavonoids) from the cannabis.
This technique is quite expensive compared to traditional methods, but it allows for the delicate separation of the desired elements. They are not broken or crushed during the process. The resulting hash, which takes its name from the technique, is very pure and just as delicate as the technique itself.
The invention of Ice o Lator hash
The process was not invented to extract CBD resin, but rather cannabis resin. It was patented in the mid-1990s by the Pollinator Company, an Amsterdam-based company specializing in the manufacture of agricultural machinery.
This same company is behind the Bubbleolator, a machine that uses a similar process to make bubble hash.
The creation of these extraction processes is attributed to Mila Jansen, known as "the queen of hash." She remains the face of the process for the Pollination Company. Since its development, the Ice-o-Lator has gained considerable renown and remains, to this day, one of the fastest and simplest to extract very high-quality hash.
The extraction process:
The extraction of Ice-o-Lator hash itself is divided into 3 stages, to which are added the optional stages of maturation and pressing.
Step 1: The mixing
This step involves separating the cannabinoid crystals from the plant material. This can be done using CBD flowers, leaves, or even branches, but these parts don't all contain the same amount of cannabinoids. Approximately 100 grams of flowers are needed to obtain less than 20 grams of hash. However, 400 or 500 grams of leaves will be required to obtain roughly the same amount of hash.
To perform this step, the previously frozen plant material is placed in the extraction machine. It's a similar principle to the freeze-drying method. Then, water and ice are added, and that's it. The machine agitates everything, separating the components in the water. Then, it's time to harvest!
Step 2: The harvest
Once the brewing process is complete, the separated elements are suspended in the water. The harvesting stage involves filtering this water through increasingly finer sieves to recover the trichomes and terpenes, which are the smallest components.
The extracted material becomes finer as it passes through the sieves, from 200 microns down to 25 microns. To give you an idea of what this represents, a bacterium is generally between 0.5 and 5 microns in size, so billions of micropitems are recovered to make up the hash.
Step 3: Drying
Since water is used to separate the resin from the plant material, it's important to dry the hash properly before consuming it. This step isn't complicated in itself, but it must be carried out meticulously to prevent mold growth.
Generally, the method involves separating the hash into small portions which are spread as thinly as possible so that they dry quickly and evenly.
Additional steps: maturation & pressing
CBD resin is a bit like wine; it can certainly be consumed when it's ready, but it's always better to wait a little. Not just because you'll have waited, but because it will have time to mature and develop finer, more delicate aromas. Some claim that this step could also enhance its psychoactivity, which isn't impossible.
This is somewhat similar to what happens with CBN. It's produced by the oxidation of THC, which occurs when the flowers are left in the sun. CBN itself is only slightly psychoactive, but it plays a significant role in the entourage effect, amplifying the effects of THC.
After maturation, or curing, comes pressing. Again, this is a matter of taste. Ice-o-Lator hash can be consumed unpressed; it then resembles a clump of powder or large crumbs and burns with bubbles.
With hot pressing, it takes on a more compact, smooth, and oily texture. This also enhances its effect, firstly because it is concentrated, and secondly because the heat exerted during pressing activates the cannabinoids, thus revealing their full potency.
Advantages and disadvantages of the technique
The technique has several advantages:
- She uses no solvents or additives to extract the hash, only water, ice cubes, sieves, and a little elbow grease.
- It allows you to create a hash from the leaves; all elements are valued.
- It is easy to use and can be used anywhere as long as you have water and ice
On the other hand, the drawbacks of the technique are rather minor. The biggest downside is that the technique uses a relatively large amount of water, which in the current context is not necessarily ideal.
Some also cite the cost of the equipment as a drawback; a machine costs around 200 euros and each bag costs between 50 and 90 euros. But in our opinion, this is quite relative and depends primarily on how you use it.
