Dosing CBD oil: the complete guide
There are a multitude of products containing CBD: oils, capsules , flowers, resins… However, taking CBD in oil form is one of the most effective ways to consume cannabidiol
In a bottle, the dosage is very practical and easy to control thanks to its dropper. Furthermore, sublingual administration, by placing the drops under the tongue, allows the CBD to quickly come into contact with the endocannabinoid receptors, thus enabling rapid and optimal effectiveness.
There are three types of CBD oils:
- CBD isolate oils containing the CBD molecule alone
- Broad-spectrum CBD oils, THC-free
- Full-spectrum CBD oils containing THC (below the legal limit of 0.3%)
Full-spectrum CBD oils contain all the cannabinoids available in hemp. Because these substances enhance each other, their effectiveness is greatly improved when combined. This is known as the entourage effect.
The effects of CBD oils according to dosage
CBD can be the source of many positive effects that improve daily well-being . It can be helpful in cases of:
- For chronic and menstrual pain: thanks to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, it helps reduce the sensation of pain and helps your body fight muscle and joint inflammation, in particular.
- Regarding stress and anxiety: CBD has a scientifically observed anxiolytic effect. It can help regulate chronic and occasional stress experienced daily.
- Some sleep complications: Cannabidiol has a beneficial effect on muscle and mental relaxation and a regulatory effect on the circadian cycle which can help to sleep better and fall asleep more easily.
- Appetite and acne problems: CBD also has a regulatory effect on sebum production and appetite.
As you can see from the curve above, the choice of CBD oil type has a very significant impact on the effects of CBD and its duration of action.
As you can see on the blue curve, an isolate containing only CBDhas a limited-time effect, resulting in a bell-shaped curve. After reaching its peak effect, the CBD activity gradually diminishes until it disappears.
On the contrary, the effects of full-spectrum CBD on the red curve are sustained over time. Even if the optimal dosage is exceeded, the effects remain at their high level1]
That being said, this doesn't mean you should take CBD without moderation. We always advise starting with the lowest possible dose of CBD before increasing it if needed. It's very important to know how your body reacts before gradually increasing the dose.
Dosing your CBD oil: factors to consider
Like all active substances, its effect on your body is influenced by many factors. To find theperfect amount of CBD oil for you, you need to consider:
- The problem you want to solve and its intensity
- Your metabolism (are you sensitive to active substances in general)
- Your weight
- Other active substances you have ingested (medicine, alcohol, etc.)
- Your current mood and physical condition
- The type of CBD product used: CBD oils, e-liquids, CBD flowers
We mention any medications and alcohol you may have consumed concurrently to cover all aspects of CBD dosage. However, we remind you that it is strongly advised against consuming CBD if you have consumed or are about to consume alcohol. Similarly, if you are undergoing any medical treatment, please consult your doctor before taking any CBD.
How to dose CBD oil? The steps of taking it
Generally, the dose is between 1 mg and 6 mg per 5 kg of body weight. For example, a person weighing 80 kg should take between 16 and 96 mg depending on the intensity of the pain.
If this is your first time trying CBD oil as a pain reliever, it is best to start small (between 16 and 30 mg for an 80 kg person) and then increase if needed.
In all cases, the maximum not to be exceeded is 1500 mg/day.
Step 1 : Determine the minimum dose based on the various factors to be taken into account
Step 2 : Calculate the correct dose using the information below. The type of oil is not a factor in the basic dosage; only the concentration matters.
- 2.5% CBD oil: 1.25 mg of CBD per drop.
- 5% CBD oil: 2.5 mg of CBD per drop.
- 10% CBD oil: 5 mg of CBD per drop.
- 20% CBD oil: 10 mg of CBD per drop.
- 30% CBD oil: 15 mg of CBD per drop.
Step 4 : Patience
Finding the right dosage takes time to achieve the desired effects. While some effects can be felt immediately (pain, depressive states), others require an "accumulation" (particularly for the relief of epilepsy).
Dosages depending on the pathology
To go further, if you would like to know the doses prescribed for serious illnesses, here are the recommended dosage ranges according to the Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science):
- Chronic pain : 2.5-20 mg of CBD (with or without THC) preferably in oil form.
- Severe sleep disturbances : 40 mg to 160 mg of CBD per day
- Movement problems due to Huntington's disease : 10 mg of CBD per kg of body weight per day
- Symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) : 2.5 to 120 milligrams per day of a THC/CBD combination for 2 to 15 weeks. Patients typically use eight sprays over three hours, with a maximum of 48 sprays in a 24-hour period.
- Schizophrenia : 40 to 280 mg of oral CBD per day.
- Glaucoma : a single sublingual dose of CBD of 20 to 40 mg (> 40 mg may increase intraocular pressure).
- Epilepsy : 200-300 mg of CBD (orally) per day.
- These CBD dosage suggestions are based on various scientific research, publications, expert opinions, and user feedback. [2] However, this listed and referenced information is provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional, medical, or legal advice.
