What is a Hash: Etymology, Origin and Definition

Definition

Traditionally, hashish is extracted from the female flowers of the cannabis plant. This plant, which grows naturally in several regions of the world (notably in North Africa and India), has likely been known since the dawn of humanity. Indeed, numerous traces of cannabis residue have been found in funerary contexts, in tombs over 2,500 years old, particularly in China, India, and the Middle East. The earliest traces of hemp in textiles, meanwhile, appear to date back more than 115,000 years.

Hashish, or hash, can also be spelled hachich, haschisch, or even hachisch. All these terms commonly refer to the resin of cannabis or hemp. Written in Arabic as حَشيش [ḥašīš], it translates as "grass hay." It is a manufactured product obtained from the extraction of the active components of hemp or cannabis (trichomes, terpenes, etc.).

Traditional manufacturing methods

Hemp and cannabis grow naturally in many parts of the world. Humans have likely been using them since the dawn of time.

There are two main traditional methods of hashish production, which are still used today:

Dry sieving

Used primarily in Morocco and India, this extraction technique involves rubbing pre-dried cannabis flowers through a very fine sieve. With each pass, the trichomes containing cannabinoids and terpenes are separated from the plant material. This produces a powder called "kief." If you use a grinder with a built-in sieve, this is precisely the powder you collect in the last compartment. The kief is then cold-pressed or hot-pressed to form blocks of hash. Cold pressing generally produces lighter, more crumbly hash, while hot pressing results in darker-colored blocks.

Manual extraction – the Charras

This technique, used particularly in the foothills of the Himalayas (in India and Nepal), involves rubbing undried cannabis flowers between the hands to collect the trichomes. The sticky resin gradually accumulates on the skin, then is scraped off to form dark, sticky balls.

History of hash in France

Although known since antiquity, hashish was rediscovered in France during the modern era, following Napoleon's conquest of Egypt in the early 19th century. Hashish then gained popularity throughout the century. Hash-smoking clubs, known as "hashishins," were frequented by several generations of artists and poets. These included Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Théophile Gautier, Alexandre Dumas, and many other prominent figures.

It should be noted, however, that the hashish consumed at that time may not have been exactly the same as that found today. Some authors suggest a cannabis decoction to which a small amount of opium was added. We'll let you imagine the result…

Hashish was therefore in vogue throughout the 19th century and did not stop there. Surviving both World Wars by using the trade routes of the colonies, it remained present throughout the 20th century and to this day.

Although cannabis resin is now considered a public health problem (despite the “war on drugs”), legal CBD resin remains one of the best-selling products in this category throughout Europe.

Fun fact: the word hashish may be the origin of the word "assassin"

Some accounts dating from the Middle Ages speak of a Shiite sect in rebellion against the ruling power, which supposedly retreated to the mountains of present-day Iran.

This sect, made up of fanatical fighters who consumed large quantities of hashish before carrying out their missions, specialized in the targeted assassination of high-ranking officials.

We're talking about executions as swift as they were discreet, carried out in broad daylight, worthy of an Assassin's Creed scenario.
Although this story is now largely considered a myth, used for political or propaganda purposes, it is almost certain that the name for hashish users — the Hashishins — is at the origin of the word “assassins” in Latin languages.

Hash and cannabis: why consume CBD hash?

One might legitimately wonder what the point is of producing or consuming hash, since one could consume the flowers directly. And yet, there are several reasons for this. Extracting cannabis resin involves separating the active elements we're interested in from the raw plant material. Only the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other compounds remain in the resin.

Hash therefore has several advantages:

• Potency: Hash is naturally more concentrated in cannabinoids than flowers.
• Storage and transport: the product is more concentrated, more stable, easier to store and move than dried and fragile flowers.
• Taste, flavors and physical presentation: free from most plant elements, hash offers a more pronounced taste, a compact and malleable texture, as well as an appearance that is highly appreciated by enthusiasts.

Classic hash contains THC: is it legal in France?

Traditional hashish, that is, hashish derived directly from the cannabis plant, generally contains a high concentration of THC. However, THC is classified as a narcotic in France.

The applicable regulations can be found in:

• The decree of February 22, 1990, which classifies delta-9-THC as a narcotic.
• The decree of December 30, 2021 specifies that only varieties of Cannabis sativa L. whose THC content does not exceed 0.3% can be cultivated and marketed, under strict conditions.

In short, hashish, like cannabis, is illegal if it contains more than 0.3% THC. In the case of classic hashish, which is specifically made from trichomes, it can reach a THC concentration of over 25%.

What does the law say regardingusaor possession?

In the case ofusaor possession of cannabis resin, Article L3421-1 of the Public Health Code states that:

“The illicitusaof narcotics is punishable by one year of imprisonment and a fine of 3,750 euros.”

Fixed fines have been introduced for simpleusa(€200), but possession, sale or purchase remains a criminal offense, even for small quantities.

What are the effects of CBD hash?

Duration of effects and consumption of CBD hash

The smoke

Effects: CBD Hash vs. THC Hash

It is primarily because of their effects that CBD is legal and THC is prohibited.
