CBD resin, also known as hashish or pot, is a product of the hemp plant. It is essentially composed of trichomes, also known as pollen. Trichomes are small white crystals visible to the naked eye on hemp flowers. Naturally secreted, they contain mostly cannabinoids and terpenes. It is these components that are responsible for the effects, fragrance, taste and texture of the different CBD shits.
How CBD resin is made
The creation of CBD resin involves two major stages: extraction and pressing.
The best-known and most widely used extraction techniques
Extracting CBD hash involves separating the pollen from the plant material of the CBD flowers. There are a number of different, more or less ancient methods for doing this. They all have a major impact on the finished product. Depending on the method used, the color, texture and taste of the resin may vary.
- Dry sift extraction: this technique is undoubtedly the simplest and most widely used. Dry hemp flowers are rubbed through increasingly fine sieves. Each pass refines the composition of the finished product. It's a natural, solvent-free method thatproduces very pure resins.
- Ice-O-Lator / Bubble Hash: for this type of extraction, the hemp flowers are immersed and stirred in ice-cold water. This allows the trichomes to separate naturally from the flowers. Then, as with dry sifting, all that's left is to filter the whole through increasingly fine sieves. As with dry extraction, this method produces a very pure hash, but with a softer, more malleable consistency.
- Manual extraction (Charas): this age-old technique is probably the least used in the industrial sector. It involves rubbing fresh flowers by hand, so that the resin accumulates on the skin. This method produces a very greasy, sticky hash.
The main pressing techniques
Pressing is the final stage. As the name suggests, it involves pressing the extracted pollen to form the shit platelets. Two main techniques are used, but it should be noted that some products, such as
CBD pollen or Ice-O-Lator resinsare in no hurry.
- Heat pressing: pollen is pressed in a heated press at low temperature. The heat is used to soften the pollen and the oil it contains to facilitate agglomeration, often producing a more compact resin. The resulting resin can be recognized by its darker outer part than its inner part. Hot-pressed shit is often stronger in taste and effect.
- Cold press: the cold press technique is much the same, but the pollen is not heated. The resulting shit is often clearer, less compact and more crumbly. However, as the cannabinoids and terpenes are not affected by heat, this type of resin has finer, more complex aromas and a slightly higher cannabinoid content - although the effects are generally milder.
