CBDP: What is it and what are its effects?

Following our article on 10-OH-HHC, we continue our tour of CBD analogues with CBDP.
CBDP, whose full name is "cannabidiphorol", was discovered not so long ago at the same time as its mirror cannabinoid tetrahydro version: THCP (or tetrahydrocannabiphorol for those in the know).

What is CBDP?
While CBDV, THCV and H2CBD were already known since the mid-20th century, the discovery of CBDP and THCP dates only from 2019. This is due to their very low presence in nature (less than 1%).
This discovery is owed to a team of Italian researchers working at the University of Modena, led by Professor Giuseppe Cannazza.
Like THCP, CBDP has few differences from its counterpart. In fact, the only difference lies in its side chain. This chain contains 7 hydrocarbons in CBDP, while CBD has only 5. It is because of this difference with CBD that CBDP is also known as CBD-C7, C7-CBD, or CBD-heptyl.
More than just a variation in name, this longer hydrocarbon chain also results in a difference in the interaction of this molecule with the endocannabinoid system, which obviously translates into different effects.
What are the effects of CBDP?
We're going to talk about the potential effects of CBDP, but as always, it's important to keep in mind that we know very little about the molecule and that the effects we'll discuss are based on user feedback or preliminary research. Therefore, there is no clinical certainty to support the effects we list below.
That being said, CBDP seems to have quite a few differences compared to CBD. First, it appears that CBDP does not produce psychotropic or euphoric effects, but it seems capable of more pronounced psychoactive effects than CBD, which translate into:
- Greater antioxidant and analgesic potential
- More pronounced anxiolytic and antidepressant properties
- A greater feeling of hunger
It would also appear that CBDP has a more sustained interaction with other cannabinoids, therefore stronger entourage effects.
CBDP: Preliminary Studies
Like CBD, CBDV, and all other cannabinoids in the CBD family, CBDP does not have psychotropic effects and, currently, does not appear to cause any particular undesirable side effects (except in cases of intolerance), nor any habit-forming or addictive effects. This difference from most THC molecules makes CBD molecules very good candidates for clinical research.
Currently, there appears to be only one study that has specifically attempted to analyze the behavior and efficacy of CBDP. This study aimed to explore the potential of CBDP in the treatment of breast cancer.
Indeed, in recent years a study conducted in 2019 demonstrated that phytocannabinoids (CBD, THC, TCBA and CBDA as well as CBN) showed selective anticancer activity against several types of cancer (notably on three different lung cancer cell lines, and those of breast cancer). (1)
In addition, two other studies have also been able to prove that these cannabinoids enhance the effects of chemotherapy treatments, particularly in the treatment of tumors resistant to therapy. (2)
The study we are interested in was able to prove that the longer carbon chain of CBDP, which we have discussed, multiplied the effects of the molecule in the context of breast cancer treatment.(3)
However, these supposed effects are still only conjectures. Although they have been noted in various studies, no real-world applications have been carried out.
Production and legality
CBDP occurs naturally in hemp, but in insufficient quantities to be commercially available in its pure form. The CBDP you find sold commercially is synthesized in a laboratory. It is therefore a semi-synthetic molecule.
CBDP is obtained by isomerizing CBD distillate. In simple terms, this involves rearranging the atoms within the CBD molecule to obtain CBDP. This process has been known for over two centuries and is commonly used in several industries, such as food and beverage. It is notably through this principle that we obtain the infamous trans fatty acids and glucose-fructose syrup, which is an ingredient in a multitude of everyday products.
Regarding the legality of the molecule, in France,CBDP is completely legal as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. This is also the case for most countries in the European Union.
Our conclusion on CBDP
From what we have seen, CBDP could be included in the composition of several products in the future.
Nevertheless, and as with all other cannabinoids known to date, many studies still need to be carried out, particularly regarding their medium and long-term effects, the different routes of application, the different dosages, as well as the total absence of harmful effects and side effects in checkout to be certain of the therapeutic potential of the compound.
