CBD cosmetics: does it really work on the skin?

The short answer is yes, clearly, and this isn't just a marketing claim but a scientifically documented one. Indeed, in the early 2000s, it was discovered that the skin has its own endocannabinoid system!

This network of cutaneous receptors, composed of the same CB1, CB2, TRPV1, and PPAR-γ receptors as the internal network, is present in keratinocytes, sebocytes, hair follicles, and even skin immune cells. And like the internal system, the cutaneous system plays a key role in regulating inflammation, but not only that: it also plays a role in cell replication, sebum production, and the response to external aggressions.

What the first comprehensive study on the subject, carried out in 2009 and published in Trends in Pharmacological Sciences (1) , shows is that by applying CBD directly to the skin, this system is activated locally, without going through the general blood circulation.

In short, topical CBD products have a protective, regulatory and anti-inflammatory action, without psychoactive effects, and no risk of a positive saliva test.

The 4 proven beneficial effects of CBD when applied topically:

Sebum regulation and acne control

This is one of the most interesting and studied benefits for the skin. Several studies, such as the one published in 2014 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (2) , have demonstrated that cannabidiol has a sebostatic and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin : it reduces sebum production and reduces irritation, therefore fewer pimples and redness.

It is particularly beneficial for oily, acne-prone skin. To learn more about this topic, see our dedicated article: Getting rid of acne with CBD .

Soothes skin inflammations (eczema, psoriasis, rosacea)

In a 2019 study published in Clinical Therapeutics (3) , a team of researchers investigated the effects of a CBD-enriched ointment over three months on patients suffering from psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and resulting scarring. They observed a significant improvement in hydration and elasticity, as well as a reduction in itching and inflammation , all without any notable side effects.

Antioxidant and anti-aging effect

Another key topic in cosmetics is anti-aging creams. A study published in 2020 in Redox Biology (4) highlighted CBD's action as an activator of the Nrf2 system, a natural antioxidant system in the body that protects cells against oxidative stress. When applied regularly, certain topical products containing cannabidiol help neutralize free radicals responsible for wrinkles, age spots, and loss of elasticity. This is one of the reasons why CBD anti-aging serums are increasingly available in pharmacies and drugstores.

Relief from muscle pain and inflammation

Another study, published in the European Journal of Pain in 2016 (5), demonstrated that topical application of CBD could reduce inflammation and associated effects, particularly when it results from arthritis or joint inflammation. Good news for those disappointed by the ban on oils and capsules: the anti-inflammatory action of CBD on muscles and joints can also be achieved through ointments .

The different formats of CBD cosmetics

There are several types of CBD cosmetic products, because they don't all have the same purposes or properties. Here's a summary table to quickly find the most suitable product for you:

Format Main indication Texture Scope of application
CBD Cream Daily hydration, sensitive skin Light, melt-in-your-mouth Face, body
CBD Balm Muscle pain, joint pain, eczema Rich, buttery Targeted areas
CBD Serum Anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, radiance Fluid, fast-absorbing Face, eye contour
CBD facial oil Deep nourishment, for dry/mature skin Oily Evening face
CBD Roll-on Occasional tension (neck, temples) Liquid Specific application
CBD soap/shower gel Daily routine, problem skin Mousse Full body

What are the criteria for choosing the right CBD cosmetic?

  • The concentration : displayed in milligrams, this must be considered in relation to the total capacity of the bottle, according to…
  • Full spectrum : thanks to the entourage effect, a product containing less CBD but with a full spectrum is always better than the reverse, a product containing a lot of CBD but no other cannabinoids.
  • An organic composition : as with any other cosmetic product, it's always best to choose a product free of alcohol, parabens, and petrochemicals. Vegan and organic formulas are always preferable.

How to use topical CBD products

Topical CBD works cumulatively. A single application often won't do much. Effects are generally felt within 4 to 6 weeks when incorporated into a regular routine .

For more details on frequency and the best time to use each product, always refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

CBD serum, la crème CBD moisturizers and CBD face oils are generally used in small doses morning and evening.

The balms are applied directly to the painful or inflamed area.

Yes, and it's actually one of the few CBD formats that isn't subject to any restrictions. CBD cosmetics are regulated by the European Cosmetics Regulation (EC No. 1223/2009) and the CPNP (Cosmetic Products Notification Portal).

As long as the product complies with the THC threshold of less than 0.3 % and is notified to the CPNP, it is perfectly legal to sell and use.

Conclusion

CBD cosmetics are not a passing fad : they are a rapidly maturing category, supported by increasingly robust scientific literature. With the ban on edibles, they are emerging as the safest, legal, and sustainable alternative for enjoying the benefits of CBD on a daily basis.
