Since 2018 and its free marketing, CBD is winning over new fans every day, attracted by the potential virtues of this molecule derived from hemp.
Easy to use, available in several forms (oil, herbal tea, capsule...), and known for its anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and neuroprotective properties, CBD can be very beneficial, particularly for seniors.
We'll look at the effects that may be of interest to the elderly, with supporting studies, then talk about its dangers, the various forms of CBD and oil dosage.
CBD is an active molecule acting on the endocannabinoid system. This system, composed of a multitude of receptors scattered throughout the body, influences a number of biological responses, some of which may be particularly beneficial for seniors:
Anxiety in the elderly has a specific name: geriatric anxiety. It's a widespread problem, but on the whole it's under-appreciated and under-reported. With age, health and mobility complications, life changes and even the management of day-to-day affairs (getting around, shopping, cooking...) can generate excessive stress in many elderly people.
CBD's impact on anxiety and stress is one of the most studied properties of CBD, as it shows very good results.
Indeed, among the many studies carried out on this subject is one conducted in 2022 by the renowned medical information site Medscape. For this analysis, 2,704 people over the age of 21 suffering from anxiety, insomnia or chronic pain took CBD for 4 weeks. [1]
At the end of this period, participants completed a test which revealed that they had experienced an average 70% improvement in quality of life. [1]
Which is to say, CBD can help many people manage stress and live their lives better.
CBD has an anxiolytic action: it helps your muscles and mind to relax. And if this property is used to combat stress, it can also be used to combat certain sleep disorders.
Stress, anxiety and pain are factors that have a major impact on sleep onset and sleep quality. Preliminary studies have shown that CBD may have a positive effect on :[2]
And although these results have yet to be confirmed in humans. They remain encouraging, and given that over 70%[3] of the elderly claim to suffer from sleep disorders, CBD intake could lead to an improvement in quality of life for many of them.
According to INSERM, 65% of people over 65 and 80% of people over 80 suffer from osteoarthritis-related problems. [4]
Studies on this subject are still in their preliminary stages. They have been able to demonstrate a clear improvement in animals (rats and dogs), but although these studies need to be further developed before medicine recognizes this effect, a survey conducted in 2019 by the Osteoarthritis Foundation gives a glimpse of CBD's real usefulness in alleviating osteoarthritis.
This survey questioned over 2600 people with arthritis. Of this group, 29% reported significant relief from using CBD, while 55% reported moderate improvement. [5]
This is one of the effects that is still being studied, but which, thanks to its good results, is being studied more and more: the impact of CBD on bone metabolism.
Two studies published respectively in 2015[6] and 2020[7]have demonstrated that CBD and its action on CB1 and CB2 receptors could play a role in bone formation. Indeed, its action is thought to enhance the healing process and improve the quality of repaired bone. It could also slow bone loss linked to osteoporosis, which is common among the elderly.
Like most other effects, CBD's neuroprotective effect has not yet been studied in humans, but in cells or rats. Nevertheless, several of these studies[8][9] have demonstrated that CBD has a positive impact on certain mechanisms (the gliosis reaction, the neuroinflammatory response, oxidative stress and neurogenesis) responsible for the degradation and creation of neurons.
Depending on the case, it may delay and alleviate the symptoms of :
Blood pressure is another age-related problem. As we age, our arteries stiffen, increasing blood pressure and with it the risk of cardiovascular accident.
CBD can also help reduce this problem. Indeed, a study published in 2017 investigated the effects of a single dose of CBD on blood pressure compared to a placebo. [10] It concluded that this single dose significantly reduced resting blood pressure in all participants. However, it had no effect on blood pressure under stress.
CBD comes in a multitude of forms, and there are many ways to consume it. We've chosen to present a few of the most suitable for seniors.
Infusion: CBD infusion is the most widely consumed of all CBD oils. Simple and delicious, CBD infusion is the perfect way to help you fall asleep. Simply infuse your CBD in water containing honey, milk or cream. This last detail is important, as the CBD molecule is fat-soluble, dissolving not in water but in fat. You can also add leaves of mint, rosemary, thyme, verbena or any other infusion to make it even more gourmet.
Inhalation or vaporization: For this method of consumption, you'll need a vaporizer. It heats your CBD flower or resins, allowing you to inhale its active ingredients without the lung-damaging fumes of combustion.
In oil: CBD oil is certainly the preferred method for users seeking its beneficial effects. To use it, simply use the measuring pipette to place the desired number of drops directly under the tongue, or drop them into your herbal tea.
Capsules: CBD in capsules may be less popular than CBD oil, but it's just as practical. Containing other active ingredients in addition to CBD, capsules are calibrated to tackle specific problems: sleep, digestion, joints, stress, well-being....
As stipulated by the ANSM (Agence Nationale de la Santé et du Médicament) and the WHO (World Health Organization), or Amelie, the French health insurance website[11], CBD is not dangerous and causes no addictive effects.
Nevertheless, it can have side effects linked to its properties:
What's more, as CBD is an active molecule, it can lead to drug interactions. We therefore advise you to speak to your doctor before consuming CBD, especially if you are taking medication.
Dosage depends on your weight, the % of CBD in the oil and the intensity you need.
To find the precise oil dosage for your weight, see our daily CBD oil dosage chart.
If you're not sure what dosage intensity is best for you, we recommend starting with a light dose and then increasing as needed. The CBD oil dosages shown in our table are daily, and should be taken over the course of the day, with 6 hours between each dose.
Although most of the positive effects of CBD still need some time to be recognized by medicine, they offer promising prospects and are already helping many people.
The main problem in recognizing these characteristics is that researchers are still struggling to identify CBD's mechanisms of action in detail. The effects of CBD can sometimes vary greatly from one person to another, without it being known why.
Nonetheless, these potential benefits do exist, and CBD is recognized by the ANSM and the WHO as a safe, low-risk molecule.
If you're affected by any of the problems listed above, whatever your age, we can only advise you to try CBD. You could be one of the people for whom CBD has a real beneficial impact.
