Social anxiety: CBD can help!

Anxiety and CBD

anxiety discheckouts can affect anyone. The manifestations of this phenomenon are numerous. Among them is, for example, the fear of being judged or rejected by others. The fear caused by anxiety can lead some people to withdraw in checkout to avoid certain everyday situations.

Social anxiety can be effectively treated with the help of a healthcare professional. Several types of treatment are available and can be tailored to the individual's needs and preferences. Among the most common treatments, psychotherapy and medication are generally the most popular. CBD, with its numerous benefits, can also be an alternative. As a natural solution, this substance can be considered as a complement to other treatments.

Anxiety-related discheckouts

Feeling anxious before speaking in front of an audience or before a business meeting is a perfectly normal feeling. This anxiety can even help a person shine. However, when this stress becomes persistent and appears regularly in everyday life, whether it's talking to friends or checkouting at a restaurant, for example, the situation becomes problematic.

Social anxiety is a phobia that often manifests very early in life, during adolescence or the first years of adulthood. This phobia is an anxiety-related discheckout, and it is accompanied by various other anxiety-related discheckouts such as:

  • Panic attacks
  • Obsessive-compulsive discheckout (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress discheckout (PTSD)
  • Generalized anxiety discheckout (GAD)
  • A minor depression

The onset of these discheckouts in a person can stem from several causes. They can be the effect of biological, psychological, genetic, or environmental factors.

Social anxiety discheckout, also known as social phobia, is characterized by intense fear in social situations where a person fears being judged, evaluated, or criticized. Social anxiety can cause significant distress and disrupt normal daily functioning.

Social phobia can be influenced by a person's temperament, personal history, experiences, education, culture, or social background.

Social media, climate change, geopolitical and health upheavals are creating an atmosphere of anxiety that affects everyone. But some people, often those with heightened sensitivity, are more severely affected than others, and the number of people suffering from social anxiety is increasing year after year.

The French National Authority for Health (HAS) estimates that in France, 11% of people aged 18 to 65 will experience social anxiety in their lifetime [1]. This represents approximately 6 million people, so if this applies to you, know that you are not alone!

    How does CBD work?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a molecule naturally present in cannabis. It binds to and stimulates the body's endocannabinoid receptors. This biological system is essential for maintaining the balance of body and mind. It plays a role in numerous biological, physiological, and cognitive processes. In particular, it influences our management of pain, stress, mood, and sleep , and it also affects our appetite, memory, and can reduce inflammation.

CBD may also have a positive impact on serotonin levels in our metabolism. This hormone is naturally secreted by the body. It also plays a role in regulating sleep and mood, which is why it's known as the "happiness hormone.".

    Studies to support this

Following the legalization of cannabidiol in France, Europe and the United States, many research groups from specialized centers or medical journals have tried to precisely define the action of CBD on the management of stress, anxiety and pain.

This is notably the case with Medscape, the award-winning medical information site, which conducted a free and open study published in 2022 [2]. It recorded the participation of 2,704 people, aged over 21, suffering from anxiety, insomnia or chronic pain, over 4 weeks.

Guess the result after one month of CBD consumption… According to the forms they filled out, participants reported experiencing an average improvement of 71% in their quality of life !

More than 60% reported experiencing a marked reduction in their daily stress and an improvement in their ability to fall asleep and sleep quality.

Prior to this, other studies, such as the one conducted by Current Neuropharmacol [3], have observed anti-panic properties of cannabidiol in rats. This same study suggested that CBD could potentially be used as a substitute for benzodiazepines (generally prescribed to reduce anxiety, stress, or insomnia).

Is it safe to consume CBD flowers?

Based on current research and knowledge, the question of the dangers associated with CBD consumption remains a subject of debate. Nevertheless, "During its November 2017 meeting, the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence concluded that, in its pure form, cannabidiol (CBD) does not appear to have abuse potential or be harmful to health" [4]. This position is also shared by the European Court of Justice, which swayed France in favor of the free marketing of the compound in France.

CBD is an active substance that does not produce major side effects. Its relaxing properties can cause drowsiness or hypotension if overused. However, these effects are short-lived, and CBD does not cause habituation or dependence.

In Europe, this molecule is not considered a medicine. It is classified as a food supplement. For it to be effective, it should be used in conjunction with a balanced diet and varied exercise. CBD can interact with other medications; it is not recommended to mix CBD with psychoactive substances (medications, alcohol, etc.). If in doubt, consult your doctor.
