CBD for anxiety

Anxiety and stress, woman biting her nails

Anxiety is a reality that affects many people daily, whether it manifests as passing stress or a deeper discheckout impacting quality of life. Faced with this modern scourge, numerous solutions exist, ranging from medication to natural approaches such as relaxation, yoga, meditation… and CBD.

But how can CBD actually help to better manage anxiety? What are its effects on stress, sleep discheckouts, or even depression? What do scientific studies say about its effectiveness?

In this article, we explain what anxiety is, its different forms, and the role of CBD in regulating anxiety discheckouts. You'll also discover the results of clinical research and how to integrate CBD into your wellness routine to promote serenity and well-being every day.

What is anxiety discheckout?

Anxiety is an emotion often felt as unpleasant, which corresponds to the more or less conscious anticipation of a danger or a problem to come1].

Firstly, if the individual can tolerate it and if it does not affect daily life, anxiety can be considered normal.

Otherwise, we will speak of an anxiety discheckout, an emotion manifested by a feeling of insecurity in the face of an undetermined danger, and which can even become a permanent state.

Anxiety can become a real source of suffering, manifesting itself particularly through panic attacks. It is often accompanied by depressive states or various addictions (alcohol, tobacco, gambling, etc.).

Anxiety can be associated with neurotic states (phobias, obsessions, hysteria), psychotic states (schizophrenia: delusional ideas, hallucinations, disorganized speech) or hypochondriacal states (anxiety about one's health).

The different types of anxiety discheckouts

Three types of anxiety discheckouts are generally distinguished:

  • Panic discheckout: with a sudden onset, these are acute and unpredictable anxiety attacks;
  • Persistent anxiety: the anxiety discheckout is generalized here (ruminations on the past and fear of the future);
  • Anxiety neurosis: it affects the subject in a lasting, chronic way: it is an anxiety present at least 1 day out of 2 and established for more than 6 months.

Anxiety treatments

When the patient seeks dialogue, psychotherapy can be beneficial. Relaxation techniques, on the other hand, are effective in cases of generalized, or persistent, anxiety.

Depending on the case, the prescribed drug treatments will vary, ranging from antidepressants (Prozac, Deroxat) to benzodiazepines (Xanax, Lexomil…).

In this regard, an American study conducted on macaques [2] highlights the fact that certain neurons become active during anxiety-induced stimulation. These neurons are located in the anterior cingulate cortex, an area known for anxiety discheckouts. Thus, conventional treatments, based on the premise that this area suffers from poor neurotransmitter regulation, target these neurons, leading to a high risk of drug dependence.

The effect of CBD on anxiety

Let us recall that CBD is one of the many molecules present in hemp (Cannabis sativa L), alongside THC*, known for its psychotropic effects. CBD does not exhibit this characteristic but acts on receptors in the brain, particularly the 5-HT1A, GPR55, and CB1/CB2 receptors. A Brazilian clinical study conducted in 2008 [4] tends to demonstrate the major role of 5-HT1A, or serotonin, receptors in reducing anxiety. CBD directly stimulates these receptors and thus the impact of serotonin on mood and feelings of relaxation. Indeed, when anxiety appears and persists constantly, it may stem from a dysfunction of this 5-HT1A receptor, and CBD can regulate its function.

This article highlights some of the effects of CBD, but other, sometimes surprising, properties also deserve to be explored!

* EU regulations mandate a THC level below 0.3%.

The effects of CBD on anxiety-related discheckouts

Some scientific studies also suggest that CBD may have beneficial effects on various discheckouts associated with anxiety:

  • Depression : CBD may help reduce depressive symptoms by acting on serotonin, a key neurotransmitter in mood regulation.
  • Sleep discheckouts : Thanks to its relaxing properties and its influence on the circadian cycle, CBD can promote better quality sleep and combatinsomnia.
  • Appetite discheckouts : Its regulatory effect would increase or decrease appetite according to the body's needs, thus helping to restore a balanced diet.

By acting on these various biological functions, CBD can help regulate anxiety levels and their symptoms. The effectiveness of CBD can also be enhanced by relaxing practices such as yoga and meditation, which promote mental and physical well-being.

Clinical studies of CBD on anxiety

According to a study conducted in Great Britain in 2013[5], out of 47 individuals subjected to an anxiety stimulus, those among them who took CBD reacted better, experiencing the extinction of the anxiety discheckout.

A group of researchers from Washington State University [6] also concluded that there was a marked improvement in mood and a reduction in depression thanks to taking CBD.

In 2019, a study published in the Journal Permanente examined the interaction of CBD with anxiety and sleep [7]. Among 72 patients with anxiety discheckouts, 52 individuals responded favorably after one month of CBD use, experiencing a reduction in their symptoms.

Furthermore, an American study conducted in 2015 [8] also concluded that anxiety was reduced, while encouraging further studies in the same direction.

Thus, according to numerous studies already conducted or still underway measuring the effect of CBD on the nervous system, a clear positive interaction between the molecule and the brain's neurobiology can be deduced. By acting on serotonin levels, commonly known as the "happiness hormone" (5-HT1A receptor), and the endocannabinoid system, these studies suggest that CBD may have benefits against stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep discheckouts caused by nervous system dysfunction.

Practical information on CBD for anxiety

Unlike some other medications, CBD does not need to be taken daily to relieve anxiety, but only during periods of persistent distress.[9] In a 2018 study, subjects received CBD before undergoing a simulated public speaking test. Researchers found that an oral dose of 300 mg, administered 90 minutes before the test, was sufficient to significantly reduce the speakers' anxiety.

Some doctors and experts who prescribe CBD to their patients emphasize the individual nature of its use, with each person needing to find the right personal balance for themselves.

CBD has very few side effects, mainly drowsiness, in which case it will suffice to reduce the dose [10].

It must therefore be tested on an individual basis using a progressive method until relief is achieved.
