CBN and H3CBN: two radically different cannabinoids

CBN

Everyone knows CBD and THC, of course, but do you know about these other cannabinoids: CBN and its hydrogenated form H3CBN?

One is natural, the other semi-synthetic, and their effects are radically different. Want to find out more? Right here!

CBN and H3CBN: what are they?

CBN is an unusual cannabinoid, not synthesized by hemp and cannabis like other cannabinoids. It is derived from the breakdown of THC. When THC is exposed to light (UV), heat and air, a chemical reaction takes place: decarboxylation. It is the chemical reaction produced by this decarboxylation of THC that synthesizes CBN.
CBN is therefore a totally natural molecule, but its natural content is around 1%. Synthesizing is necessary to reach higher concentrations, such as in our Hash 34% CBN.

H3CBN is a bit like H4CBD in that both are cannabinoids to which hydrogen atoms have been added. The result is a more stable molecule, unlikely to change naturally like THC. This form stimulates the endocannabinoid system in a different way. Hydrogenation is the result of chemical manipulation of CBN in the laboratory. This makes H3CBN a semi-synthetic cannabinoid.

Contrary effects

The effect of CBN is little different from that of CBD. Like CBD, it is non-psychoactive and does not appear to be addictive or habit-forming. On the other hand, it appears to have soothing and relaxing effects. Like THC, it also seems to stimulate the appetite and create a sensation of hunger.
It is also said to have a powerful sleep-inducing effect, helping to induce deep, restorative sleep, sometimes earning it the name "sleep cannabinoid".

The hydrogenated form of CBN has a radically different action. Unlike CBN, H3CBN seems to induce a feeling of wakefulness and increased energy. Consumers report improved concentration, accompanied by a kind of mental clarity.

If CBN is the cannabinoid of sleep, then H3CBN could be considered the cannabinoid of wakefulness. But H3CBN has been developed as an alternative to HHC and appears to be just as psychoactive as the latter, producing a high and a feeling of euphoria.

A different kind of action

As mentioned above, the hydrogen molecules added to CBN change its action on the endocannabinoid system.

In fact, CBN is quite similar in structure to CBD, but their action is not the same. They both act on the CB2 receptor, but CBN also acts on the CB2 receptor, like THC, giving it a more effective sedative effect than CBD.

Conversely, H3CBN acts primarily on CB1 receptors, but also has an effect on CB2 receptors, giving it a soaring, relaxing effect.

H3CBN and H4CBD: two completely different hydrogenated versions

As already mentioned, H3CBN and H4CBD are both hydrogenated forms. However, CBD and CBN are quite similar in their effects, which is no longer the case after hydrogenation.

Unlike H3CBN, H4CBD is deeply soothing and relaxing. It doesn't produce a euphoric effect, but a greater sense of release and carelessness. Likewise, H4CBD does not induce a high, nor does it appear to have any psychotropic effects.

In short, H4CBD resembles CBD, but in a more muscular version. H3CBN behaves in the opposite way, being developed to replace HHC, it would be closer to a sativa, if we had to find an example.

Legality and new compounds

The legal status of the new CBD-derived cannabinoids on the market is still open to debate. Nevertheless, as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC, they are legal, until proven otherwise...
In fact, all new compounds are available until the ANSM (Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé) has thoroughly analyzed them. Following these analyses, the ANSM authorizes or definitively bans the compounds, depending on their harmfulness or addictive effect.

As far as the latter is concerned, CBN seems completely harmless and not addictive, so it looks as though it will be available alongside CBD for a long time to come. H3CBN, on the other hand, is less certain: given its psychoactive effects, it could very well suffer the same fate as HHC by being banned.
