Hash is a favorite of many CBD - and THC - consumers.
This term, short for hashish, is used as a synonym for resin. Resin is a product derived from the extraction of active compounds from hemp and cannabis (terpenes, cannabinoids...), which means that there are as many different types of hash as there are varieties of CBD, cannabis and extraction processes.
In this article, we take a closer look at the famous hashish that everyone's raving about.
Traditionally, hashish is extracted from the female flowers of the cannabis plant. This plant, which grows naturally in many parts of the world (notably the Maghreb and India), has probably been known since the dawn of mankind. Indeed, several traces of cannabis residues have been found in funerary contexts, in tombs dating back over 2,500 years, notably in China, India and the Middle East. The first traces of hemp in textiles date back over 115,000 years.
Hashish, or hash, can also be spelled hachich, haschisch or even hashish. All these terms commonly refer to cannabis or hemp resin. Written in Arabic حَشيش [ḥašīš], it translates as "grass hay". It's a manufactured product resulting from the extraction of active elements from hemp or cannabis (trichomes, terpenes...).
Hemp and cannabis grow naturally in many parts of the world. They have probably been used by human beings since the dawn of time.
There are two main traditional methods of making hashish, which are still used today:
Used mainly in Morocco and India, this extraction technique involves rubbing previously dried cannabis flowers over a very fine sieve. As the flowers pass through, the trichomes containing the cannabinoids and terpenes are separated from the plant material. The result is a kind of powder called "kief". If you're using a grinder fitted with a sieve, this is exactly the powder you collect in the last compartment. The kief is then cold- or hot-pressed to form blocks of hash. Cold pressing generally produces lighter, crumblier hash, while hot pressing gives the wafers a darker color.
This technique, used particularly in the Himalayan foothills (India and Nepal), involves rubbing undried cannabis flowers between the hands to recover the trichomes. The sticky resin gradually accumulates on the skin, then is scraped off to form dark, sticky balls.
Although known since antiquity, hash was rediscovered in France in modern times, during Napoleon's conquest of Egypt in the early XIXᵉ century. Hashish then gained notoriety throughout the century. Clubs for hash smokers, called "hashishins", were frequented by several generations of artists and poets. Among them were Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Théophile Gautier, Alexandre Dumas and many others.
It should be noted, however, that the hashish consumed at the time may not have been quite the same as that found today. Some authors refer to a decoction of cannabis to which a small quantity of opium was added. We'll leave you to imagine the result...
So hashish was in vogue throughout the XIXᵉ century and didn't stop there. Crossing the two World Wars through the trade routes of the colonies, it remains present throughout the XXᵉ century right up to the present day.
Although cannabis resin is now considered a public health problem (despite the "war on drugs"), legal CBD resin remains one of the best-selling products in this category throughout Europe.
Some accounts dating back to the Middle Ages speak of a Shiite sect in rebellion against the powers that be, which retreated to the mountains of present-day Iran.
This sect, made up of fanatical fighters who consumed large quantities of hashish before carrying out their missions, specialized in the targeted assassination of high dignitaries.
We're talking about fast, discreet street executions worthy of an Assassin's Creed scenario.
Although this story is now widely regarded as a myth, used for political or propagandistic purposes, it is almost certain that the name of the hashish consumers - the Hashishins - is the origin of the word "assassins" in the Latin languages.
One might legitimately ask what's the point of producing or consuming hash, since we could be directly consuming the flowers. And yet, there are several reasons for this. Extracting cannabis resin involves separating the active elements of interest from the raw plant material. All that remains in the resin are the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids...
The hash has several advantages:
Traditional hash, which comes directly from the cannabis plant, generally contains a high concentration of THC. THC is classified as a narcotic in France.
The applicable regulations can be found in :
In short, hash, like cannabis, is illegal if it contains more than 0.3% THC. In the case of classic hashish, which is composed specifically from trichomes, the THC concentration can exceed 25%.
In the case of use or possession of cannabis resin, article L3421-1 of the French Public Health Code states that :
"Illegal use of narcotics is punishable by one year's imprisonment and a fine of 3,750 euros."
Fixed fines have been introduced for simple use (€200), but possession, sale or purchase remain punishable by law, even for small quantities.
This is where CBD hash comes in.
As the law does not regulate CBD concentration, resins based on CBD or other legal cannabinoids are themselves totally legal.
You can therefore freely obtain and use CBD, CBG and CBN resins, and currently other molecules such as 10-oh-HHC resins, muscimole hashes, CBDP, THV, THCN and THM hashes...
If you're not familiar with these molecules, visit the dedicated category on our blog, or check out our CBD-derived products in our store.
CBD hashes are an excellent alternative to CBD resins. Indeed, these hashes, like the most emblematic in France, Beldia Hash, are composed in the same way as traditional resins, the only difference being that the flower varieties used are harvested from hemp plants with naturally low THC levels.
As a result, their tastes, flavors, colors and textures are very similar. Only their THC content changes.
Obviously, CBD resins have no psychotropic effects, no "high" or "high", but there are resins that offer effects of similar potency to classic resins.
This resin is extracted manually using static electricity. This innovative technique enables the cannabinoid-laden trichomes to be recovered gently and precisely.
The resin obtained is then infused with 10-OH-HHC. This metabolite, a by-product of HHC, is comparable in potency to the latter, although its effects are more rapid and short-lived.
Kashmiri hash is a resin known the world over for its frank, full-bodied aromas. Originally produced from wild cannabis in India's Kashmir region, it gained notoriety in the 1970s thanks to the famous "hash tours".
Our Kashmiri hash resin, designed to reproduce these iconic flavors, is then infused with THV. THV is a new kind of synthetic molecule, specially formulated to mimic the effects of THCV, a secondary cannabinoid that oscillates between boosting effects and a slight high.
The effects of CBD hash are essentially the same as those of CBD flowers. But their concentration is often higher, resulting in greater potency. The main effects noted are:
But CBD, whether in flower or resin form, has many other effects, some of which, like those on the libido, are sure to surprise you. To dig deeper into the subject, feel free to explore our article dedicated to the effects of CBD.
You surely know that there are many ways to consume your CBD hash, but did you know that its effects and their duration change depending on how you consume it?
It's surely the most widespread form of consumption, but also the most dangerous. Smoking CBD hash presents a high risk of damaging your lungs. Even more so when mixed with tobacco, which is also very harmful to your health and highly addictive. That's why smoking CBD as a joint is forbidden.
Eating hash directly is not recommended: the taste is very powerful and not really pleasant. However, you can heat your hash (no more than 60°C for 5 minutes) in the oven to activate the cannabinoids, then infuse the hash in butter or oil for 30 minutes over low heat. This butter or oil can be included in recipes of your choice, to make cookies, cakes or dishes.
The effects of CBD can be felt between 30 minutes and two hours after intake. They generally last from 6 to 8 hours.
This is by far our preferred method. Equipped with a vaporizer, you can consume hash at any time, without tobacco or harmful combustion. Simple, fast and effective, vaporization develops a much more efficient bioavailability than other consumption methods, with an unrivalled cannabinoid absorption rate.
The effects are therefore more powerful, faster (between 5 and 10 minutes) and last on average between 1 and 3 hours.
If you need a step-by-step guide, don't hesitate to consult our article dedicated to CBD vaporization.
It's mainly because of their effects that CBD is permitted and THC is banned.
CBD produces an anxiolytic and analgesic effect. It does not produce a "high", nor a "high", and has very few side effects. It is neither dangerous nor harmful to health, and produces neither addiction nor dependence.
THC, on the other hand, produces a "high", a cognitive distortion that affects mental faculties, perception of time, movement and sometimes color.it can be dangerous for mental health, causing bouts of paranoia and depression, particularly in younger people.it even creates learning and developmental disorders, and is also associated with high risks of dependence and addiction.
If you've ever been to a CBD store, or visited our page dedicated to resins, you'll have noticed that there are so many different varieties to choose from, but don't panic, choosing is easy: the right product is the one you like, the one that meets your expectations in terms of needs, tastes - and, of course, budget.
Once you've identified the features that interest you, compare product photos and read product descriptions to find the ideal product for you.
There are two main types: mellow hash with an oily, creamy texture, like Beldia or Olive. Dry, crumbly resins like 3x filtered or Dark Zero. Texture doesn't really have a direct impact on taste or potency, but is more important in terms of ease of use. A soft resin will be easier to knead and therefore easier to use for vaporization or infusion. A drier resin is easier to crumble and dose.
Depending on the extraction method and the varieties used to make CBD resin, you can choose a strong-tasting hash with hints of hazelnut and chocolate, like Ketama Gold. Or hash with more exotic fruit or citrus flavors, like Lemon.
Color depends on a multitude of factors: the variety used, the extraction method, pressure or maturation. Color can give some clues as to the aromatic profile of resins. Hash with light tones, from light brown to yellow, is often softer and more filtered. Conversely, darker hashes, from dark brown to black, are the result of hot pressing or longer maturation. They often correspond to products with more pronounced flavors.
Prefer hash containing CBN or full spectrum CBD rich in myrcene. This type of hash is perfect for relaxing at the end of the day, and can help you fall asleep more peacefully.
Opt for CBG hash or resins containing high levels of anti-inflammatory cannabinoids. The CBD + CBG combo is often effective on muscle tension or mild joint pain.

CBD hash, like flowers, is sensitive to heat, light and humidity, because in contact with these, the cannabinoids can rapidly deteriorate.
So here are a few best practices for keeping your resin and its cannabinoids at their best for as long as you like:
Stored in this way, your hash can retain its properties intact for several months!
But here's an extra tip for those who want to keep it even longer: cut your hash into pieces, seal them in a vacuum bag (cellophane-type elastic paper can do the trick), and head for the freezer.
This way, you can keep your hash for years and only use what you need!
