Space cakes are pastries enriched with hemp or cannabis. As they are consumed by ingestion, they are classified as edibles. Most often in the form of cookies or brownies, these cakes can contain varying amounts of THC or CBD, depending on the ingredient used to prepare them.

Bear in mind that it's not always easy to control the final THC or CBD dosage in a space cake, and that ingestion strongly modifies the intensity and duration of the effects. It is therefore essential to exercise restraint and consume these pastries responsibly.

Space cake brownie recipe

To make a CBD brownie recipe, you'll need the following ingredients:

 

 

• 250 g dark chocolate
• 15 to 30 g hemp flowers or trim (or 5 to 10 g resin)
• 150 g sugar
• 150 g butter
• 1 sachet vanilla sugar
• 60 g sifted flour
• 3 eggs
• 1 pinch salt

The recipe is divided into two parts: making the hemp butter, then making the space brownie.

But once you've made your own butter, you can use it in a recipe for cookies or a drink, or as is on toast or in an infusion.

Hemp butter recipe

• Decarboxylation: Grind the hemp, place on a baking tray and bake for 30-40 minutes at 110-115°C. The CBD should heat up, but not burn. The CBD should heat up, but not burn.
• Infusion: Melt the butter in a saucepan, add 1 liter of water and your hemp. The water will prevent the butter from burning and, as it doesn't mix, it will be easy to recover the butter once it has cooled.
  Leave to infuse over a very low heat for 1-2 hours. The mixture should never boil. If you're worried about it getting too hot, you can place the butter and water in a bain-marie.

• Filter the still-warm mixture through a fine sieve or clean cloth to separate any plant remains, then place in a cool place.

CBD brownie recipe

Once you have your Marrakech butter, all that's left to do is follow a classic recipe:

• Melt the butter and broken chocolate over a very low heat in a bain-marie.
• Off the heat, mix the melted chocolate and butter, then add and mix in the following order:
  sugar, vanilla sugar, beaten eggs, pinch of salt, and finally flour.
• Place the mixture in a greased baking tin and bake for 15-20 minutes at 180°C.

Classically, CBD flowers are used to make Marrakech butter, but you can use other ingredients for variety:

For those bothered by the taste or smell of cannabis or resin, you can simply use CBD isolate or crystals. In this case, you skip the decarboxylation step and go directly to the infusion stage, but it's essential to adjust the dose. The crystals are 99.9% pure: you shouldn't exceed 500 mg.

Precautions

There are several precautions to observe if you want to make space cakes and consume them safely, especially if it's your first time, or if you're using a new CBD:

• Adapt the dose to your tolerance: When preparing the recipe, do not exceed the indicated dose, and if in doubt, do not hesitate to reduce it.
• Wait a minimum of 6 hours before taking a second space cake: This is a classic beginner's mistake. Everyone's metabolism is different: it can take a long time for the effects to kick in. Wait until you're sure they've taken effect before taking another.
• Avoid going it alone: Not only is it always more fun to go it alone, it's also safer.

Possible side effects

In rare cases, consuming CBD space cake can cause various side effects:

What to do in the event of overconsumption?

If you feel ill after ingesting CBD space cake, you can follow these few guidelines to calm the situation:

Stay calm: that's the most important thing. Remember that the toxicity of CBD is very limited. Just wait and the effects will wear off on their own. Panic will only make the situation worse.

Find a comfortable position: lie down, get into bed or curl up on the sofa. Find the most comfortable position possible to help you stay calm and wait for the effects to wear off.

Space cake: effects and mode of action

When consumed by ingestion, space cakes produce very different effects from those obtained by vaporization. As cannabinoids pass through the digestive system rather than the lungs, their onset, intensity and duration change radically.

 

When you eat a space cake, cannabinoids first reach the stomach, then the digestive tract.
There, they are partially broken down by gastric acidity and digestive enzymes, enabling the intestinal mucosa to absorb them and send them to the bloodstream.

This mode of absorption is slow, which explains why effects appear with a delay, generally between 30 minutes and 2 hours after ingestion.

Once in the blood, cannabinoids pass through the liver, where they are metabolized.
In the case of THC, the liver produces a key metabolite: 11-hydroxy-THC (11-OH-THC). CBD, on the other hand, creates 7-hydroxy-CBD (7-OH-CBD).

These metabolites cross the blood-brain barrier more easily than inhaled THC and CBD, resulting in more intense, powerful and, above all, much longer-lasting effects.

That's why the effects of a space cake can last 6 to 8 hours, sometimes longer, depending on dose, metabolism and diet.

The origin and history of Space Cake

From Antiquity to the Renaissance, around the world

Although space cake was particularly fashionable from the 70s onwards, the use of cannabis by ingestion was far from born at that time. In fact, references to the use of spiced milk or butter with cannabis paste, known as bhang, bhang thandai or bhang lassi, can be found in Indian Vedic texts dating back to around 1000 BC.

The same type of tradition also exists in North Africa: majoun, a pastry made with butter from Marrakech, was enjoyed by Berber tribes in the XIᵉ century.

In Europe, mention of cannabis-infused foods can be found in a cookbook published in 1465 by historian and gastronome Bartolomeo Platina : De honesta voluptate et valetudine (translated as "On honorable pleasure and health").

Edible cannabis in modern culture

In the modern West, one of the recipes bringingspace cake back into fashionis "hashish fudge", published in Alice B. Toklas' cookbook. Toklas (Alice B. Toklas Cookbook) in 1954. Although space cake was not yet mentioned, the recipe enjoyed some success in the early '60s.

Relatively famous until the late 70s in the hippie counterculture, fond of "pot brownies" and "hash brownies", this recipe helped popularize the consumption of cannabis in edible form.

1970s-1990s: Amsterdam's space cake craze

Cannabis cakes first gained popularity in Dutch coffee shops in the early 70s.
Sold as a discreet, tasty alternative to joints, they took on the name they still bear today: space cake.
