We'll start, of course, with the most famous of them all: OGOG Kush. Originating in California in the early 1990s, it's generally described as the result of a cross between Hindu Kush (the Afghan landrace that gave its name to the entire family) and the Chemdawg. This union is what gave it its distinctive profile, both potent and aromatic, which has become an absolute benchmark in the world of cannabis.

Its name itself remains a mystery. The "OG" is said by some to stand for Original Gangster, by others for Ocean Grown (referring to a crop grown along the Californian coast), and a third hypothesis attributes it to the OverGrown.com, a hub of the cannabis community in the 2000s. Opinions tend to favor "Ocean Grown," but the debate is still unresolved.

In terms of appearance,OG Kush is recognizable by its rather dark green color, but especially by its thick layer of trichomes and its forests of pistils which truly make it the face of the family.

The history of Kush through the ages

The origins of Kush

The story of Kush begins in the mists of the early ages. The first specimens from which Kush originated are what is known as a landrace. This is a variety that grows naturally without having undergone genetic modification by humans.

This landrace took its name from the place where it comes from: the Hindu Kush, a mountain range reaching between 2,000 and 4,000 m in altitude, straddlingAfghaniand Pakistan, in the extension of the western Himalayas.

The global discovery

It was through the Hippie Trails of the 60s and 70s, these convoys of cannabis enthusiasts traveling the world, that the varieties that would give rise to Kush were discovered. A few breeders from Canada, the United States, and the Netherlands became interested in these plants and took some seeds with them, which were cultivated and began to circulate on the black market.

 

 

However, it would take until the following years for Kush to achieve the success we know today. It was in California, the land of renowned breeders and cannabis experimentation, that the first and one of the most famous of the family was born: OGOG Kush.

Meanwhile, fueled by constant exchanges, Kush strains also developed in the Netherlands, within the semi-legal scene. The Kush family then underwent numerous hybridizations, becoming one of the most internationally recognized strains.

The specific characteristics of Kush varieties

The many variations of Kush each have their own specific characteristics. THC and CBD levels vary, but their identity nevertheless shares common traits.

A heavy and complex aromatic profile

Kush strains are characterized by an aromatic profile in which myrcene, β-caryophyllene, humulene and α-pinene are the predominantly dominant terpenes, giving them a very pronounced aromatic profile.

It contains earthy notes, with woody and spicy nuances, sometimes varying towards diesel notes and a certain lemony acidity.

They generally have a thick, enveloping and powerful aromatic bouquet, even when they present more fruity or sweet profiles like Banana Kush or Candy Kush.
