CBD and fibromyalgia
What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia , or fibromyalgia syndrome [ 1 ], is a poorly understood and difficult-to-treat rheumatic disease . Fibromyalgia is more common in middle-aged women (onset between 20 and 50 years of age) and is characterized by intense joint and muscle pain, extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, insomnia, and/or mood discheckouts.
Diagnosing fibromyalgia can take some time because its symptoms and pain are quite similar to those of other chronic illnesses, such as rheumatic fever, osteoarthritis, migraines, etc. There isn't just one symptom present, and this doesn't help in identifying fibromyalgia.
Although fibromyalgia tends to stabilize with age and does not cause muscle damage, it already constitutes a real handicap in the lives of those who suffer from this disease2].
What are the causes of fibromyalgia?
The causes of fibromyalgia stem from several factors, and scientific studies are still underway to define them precisely. To name just a few, these include: significant emotional stress experienced during childhood or adolescence and repeated in adulthood, dysfunction in certain areas of the brain and a physiological abnormality of the nervous and hormonal systems (reduced levels of certain neurotransmitters such as glutamate and serotonin), or even certain genetic factors.
A miracle cure for patients suffering from the condition: taking therapeutic cannabidiol (CBD)?
To relieve the intense pain caused by fibromyalgia, one proposed solution would be to take CBD, which is found in cannabis or hemp in its natural state at CBD levels varying between 1 and 4%.
It is essential to distinguish CBD from THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a molecule found in cannabis resin at a concentration of 10 to 30%, which has psychoactive effects responsible for euphoria. Cannabidiol, or CBD, therefore has no psychoactive effects, unlike THC, which is illegal [3]. Still the subject of extensive scientific research, CBD appears to have very beneficial effects on the immune system, as well as on energy and inflammatory balance.
The effects of Cannabidiol (CBD) on fibromyalgia
One of the causes of fibromyalgia lies in a lack of serotonin in the brain, (as is the case for many diseases, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease which require solutions and ingredients related to the chronic treatment of pain).
Taking and using CBD, in liquid oil or plant form, has a positive and useful medical impact on the serotonin system.
Although the mechanism of this impact has not yet been fully understood, CBD is thought to interact with 3 different serotonin receptors: 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A and 5-HT3A and to have a positive impact on the serotonin system and therefore on problems related to fibromyalgia, but the properties of this mechanism remain to be discovered.
Thus, in the case of fibromyalgia, some research shows a significant reduction in stress and chronic pain thanks to the natural anxiolytic properties of cannabidiol (CBD), in oil or other forms. CBD promotes better sleep, improves mood, and reduces headaches. It therefore acts on certain key factors of fibromyalgia. For example, in a 2014 study on cannabis conducted by the National Pain Foundation, an association of fibromyalgia patients [4], 62% of the 1,400 people tested experienced a marked improvement in their pain, and 33% a slight improvement. Therefore, although further research is still underway to definitively prove the impact of cannabidiol on various types of pain and on fibromyalgia, many patients use it to relax and alleviate their suffering.
CBD oils: How to use them?
CBD can be taken in various forms, including oils to be ingested or applied to the painful area.
In the case of full Spectrum CBD oil, you will simply need to apply a few drops ofCBD oil to the tongue using a pipette.
The benefits will be felt after about 20 minutes , and the amount of oil will be adjusted according to the balance achieved. For fibromyalgia, a dose of 10 to 100 mg per day is recommended, depending on your weight and your reaction to CBD. There is no known risk of overdose , but pay attention to any fatigue you experience. If it becomes more intense than usual, you have reached the maximum dosage.
