The Cannabis Cup is the most iconic, renowned, and eagerly anticipated global event in the cannabis scene. Backed by key figures on the international scene who have never hidden their love for the plant—such as Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, the band Cypress Hill, and Method Man & Redman, the stars of the famous film How High—the event has been the must-attend gathering for growers, breeders, and enthusiasts for nearly 40 years.
Withthe 2026 edition of High Times fast approaching and a fascinating history of winners, discover everything you need to know about this legendary event that creates stars and sets new trends in hash and flower.
The origins of the Cannabis Cup date back to 1988. That year, High Times, the leading American magazine in cannabis and underground culture, decided to organize the first World Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.
The goal is to promote cannabis culture and bring together breeders, growers, and enthusiasts. The event features competitions such as:
The event was an instant success. The Cannabis Cup quickly became THE must-attend annual event, and the award-winning products, now crowned with glory, gained lasting global recognition.
The 1990s were dominated by the absolute supremacy of Dutch seed banks, notably Sensi Seeds and Green House Seed Company. It is thanks to them and the Cannabis Cup that legendary strains such as White Widow, Jack Herer, Northern Lights, and Super Silver Haze achieved the success they still enjoy today.
Developed in California in the 1960s from several landraces, Haze strains are known for being difficult to grow but exceptionally flavorful, with cerebral and energizing effects that appeal to a wide audience. Introduced to the Netherlands in the 1980s, they were patiently refined until they became the stars of the competition in the 2000s. Amnesia , Super Lemon Haze Lemon Haze the go-to strains in Amsterdam’s coffee shops.
Already known for its expertise and innovation in this field, California made a sensational entrance onto the Cannabis Cup scene in the 2010s as gradual decriminalization allowed industry players to expand freely. OG Kush its entire lineage, along with the Cookies and Diesel strains, redefined the standards by introducing sweet, vanilla-like flavors previously unknown to the industry.
With the legalization and decriminalization of cannabis in several European countries and the near-universal legalization of CBD, the cannabis scene is undergoing a new revolution. Techniques for growing, extracting, and preserving terpenes are evolving, giving rise to the WPFF, the Piatella, the Static Sift, and many other innovations.
At the same time, competitions specifically dedicated to cannabidiol are emerging, such as the Spannabis CBD Cup, and the Cannabis Cup is introducing contests for the best CBD products.
As everyone knows, 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic have permanently changed the way public events are held. The High Times Cannabis Cup was no exception. While the event had traditionally been held in Amsterdam in front of some thirty judges, the format has shifted to “People’s Choice.” More than 200 people who purchased the judging kit were able to taste the featured strains directly from home and cast their votes via a dedicated web portal.
In the wake of the pandemic, High Times returned to the U.S., taking advantage of the relaxation of cannabis laws while retaining the People’s Choice Award jury system introduced during the pandemic.

Holding the all-time, unmatched record of 14 Cannabis Cup wins between 1990 and 2010, Jack Herer—named in honor of the famous pro-cannabis activist Jack Herer by Sensi Seeds in the Netherlands—has established itself thanks to its exceptional genetic stability and balanced profile, which appeals to a wide range of consumers.
A cross between Haze, Northern Lights, and Skunk #1, it captivates with its balance of freshness and depth, and its flavors—a blend of pine and spice with a floral touch.

An absolute icon of cannabis culture, Amnesia is known for its bold, lemony flavor profile, with earthy notes that make it instantly recognizable. But above all, it’s celebrated for its stimulating, creative, and powerful cerebral high, which has captivated an entire generation and continues to attract many fans today.

Created by Green House Seeds in the mid-1990s, White Widow revolutionized the world of cannabis with its characteristic frosty appearance—which gave it its name—as well as its perfect balance of flavor and effect.
A cross between a Brazilian Sativa and a South Indian Indica, it offers an excellent balance of fruity, floral, and sweet flavors, with slightly spicy undertones and hints of sweet-and-sour notes and pine.

Super Silver Haze the icon of the late 1990s. It has won six titles, including three consecutive victories in 1997, 1998, and 1999. Descended from champion strains such as Skunk, Northern Lights, and Haze, it captivates with its energizing effects and the classic Haze aroma—both lemony and peppery. Super Silver Haze the perfect choice for fans of old-school flavors, evoking the vibe of the 1990s and 2000s.

OG Kush is a game-changer in the cannabis world. Its sensational debut in the 2010s made such a lasting impression that it became the foundation for a new branch of slightly sweet-tasting strains: Girl Scout Cookies, Gelato, Wedding Cake, and hundreds of others are direct descendants of this strain.
Its distinctive blend of diesel, lemon, and pine, with a hint of sweetness, is so recognizable that “the Kush aroma” has become a term in its own right to describe this flavor.
The 2025 edition marked a historic milestone by taking place for the first time in the Big Apple: New York. Four years after cannabis was legalized in the state, the competition returned to its roots in the city where the newspaper was founded in 1974.
Maintaining the People’s Choice voting format, the results were announced in February 2026:
The next edition of the Cannabis Cup has been announced for New Jersey, the Garden State, in 2026. Building on the success of its post-COVID editions, the famous competition continues its state-by-state tour.
New Jersey, which legalized recreational cannabis at the same time as New York in 2021, thus becomes the second state on the East Coast to host the competition in its new “People’s Choice” format.
At this time, few details have been released about the event, but pre-registration forms are already available online, and we will be sure to keep you updated on the event’s progress.
