THCV: the cannabinoid as fast as it is powerful

Are you one of the CBD adventurers looking for new effects? Want to sample all the cannabinoids hemp has to offer? You've come to the right place: here's a cannabinoid that's semi-synthetic, but naturally present in hemp: THCV. This new nugget has only just entered the green gold rush, and already it's being snapped up from all sides. Are you in? Click here to find out!

What is THCV

Like THCPits twin, tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), is one of the cannabinoids naturally present in hemp and cannabis plants. THCV levels are usually in the order of 1 or 2%. To produce our Elevator, which reaches 20%, we use chemistry. It is produced synthetically from the parent cannabinoid: CBG.

The entourage effect of THCV

Like CBD derivatives such as HHCPO or THCPO, the action of THCV is still relatively unknown, but what is known is that THCV plays a major role in what is known as the entourage effect. This term refers to the interactions that cannabinoids can have with each other, reinforcing or weakening each other. THCV is not very psychoactive, especially in small quantities, but it has the ability to facilitate the action of THC. The entourage effect provided by THCV helps explain why the cannabis of the 70s, with its lower THC content, was just as potent and psychoactive as that of today. In fact, THCV was more concentrated in the flowers grown back then. Its concentration was around 4 or 5%. These plants were "natural" in the sense that they had not been modified or crossed. It was only later, when efforts were made to increase the THC concentration, that the THCV concentration dropped to around the level found on average today.

THCV vs THC

THCV therefore facilitates the action of THC, making it stronger and faster, but as you know our flowers and resins contain less than 0.3%. In that case, you may be wondering what the effect of THCV is. Well, as you'd expect, THCV is chemically very close to THC. In fact, the only difference is THCV's shorter side chain. This difference is slight, but it makes quite a difference, as researchers have noted:
  • THCV has a faster and shorter psychoactive action: it produces a milder high and less lucidity.
  • It reduces hunger, while THC increases it
  • Like CBD, it has a soothing, anti-stress effect
Among these properties, its appetite-suppressant action has particularly enthused the scientific community, which has seen good potential in the fight against obesity. Recreational users are generally more interested in its appetite-suppressing properties. light, short-term high for a short break in a busy day.

History and discovery of THCV

The discovery of THCV came relatively late. It came to light in the 70s, when the hippie movement was pushing the research community to pay greater attention to cannabis, if only to control consumption. This is exactly what happened with THCV. When it was first discovered, researchers found that African varieties had a higher concentration, so it was used to determine the origin of cannabis seized by law enforcement and customs.

THCV is legal and could be for a long time to come

As you will have learned from HHC, new compounds can remain legal for some time before the authorities decide to ban them. Often, the potentially unhealthy and especially addictive effects are blamed. Early studies on THCV seem very promising in this respect. A preliminary study on smoking 1 was able to observe that this molecule behaved as a CB1 receptor antagonist, which means that it could offer anti-addiction properties. Other studies have also observed potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as CBD 2. They also noted a possible regulating effect on glycemia and a neuroprotective action. Research into THCV is still in its infancy, but if these initial observations prove to be correct, this cannabinoid has a very bright future ahead of it. Despite this, and once again, it remains a cannabinoid on which research remains very thin, so we urge you to exercise caution and avoid over-consumption.
