CBN is a cannabinoid derived from the oxidation of THC. Intimately linked to THC, CBN appears when THC degrades in contact with air and heat. It is thus generated by the oxidation or decarboxylation of THC. For this reason, smuggled cannabis from Mexico or certain parts of Africa, which is usually sun-dried to respond quickly to high demand, contains the most CBN (usually just under 1%).
Although related to THC as a "by-product", its effects are closer to those of CBD, with which it shares more in common. Like CBD, CBN stimulates B2 endoreceptors and hardly interacts with the B1 receptors that respond to THC. Like CBD flowers, it is consumed for its possible soothing and sedative properties , and does not cause any psychotropic effects, or "high". Nor is it habit-forming or addictive.
